Can You Dig It? 2014 Women Build Ground Breaking on May 10th

Womens build opening 2013 (2)

Spring has sprung (well, almost), and it’s time to start digging! Save the date and join the army of over 200 Women Build Volunteers as we break ground for the foundation of the 10th home sponsored and built by Flower City Habitat for Humanity Women Build volunteers.

Saturday, May 10th at 11:00 AM, 796 Jay Street

The groundbreaking ceremony is the official KICKOFF for the 2014 Women Build project and celebrates the first day of construction. It is the first of three major milestones in the building of the Women Build home. The second and third are the Wall Raising in June and the Dedication in August or September. Each milestone represents a time for celebration and reflection of what’s been accomplished, and what lies ahead.  It takes 77 days to build a house, and this is Day #1!! Please come and grab the ceremonial gold shovel and help with the dig, meet the family and other volunteers!

This also means that you and your teams can start signing up NOW for Build Days, with Tuesday, May 13th as the first official build day. Check out the schedule on Volunteer Up!, Flower City Habitat for Humanity’s online volunteer management system.

EVERYONE is WELCOME! We’ll be there rain or shine (and hopefully, no snow!!). Won’t you please join us? Bring your entire team and remember,

Hero Awards

Greetings from the Steering Committee!

We are very pleased to announce that the following teams have earned the Hero Award for raising over $2,000 for the 2013 Flower City Habitat Women Build:

LaBella Associates
Babes in Tool Land

Congratulations to the leaders and members of each of these teams on an incredibly successful year of fundraising!

LaBella Assocciates

Both teams were on site building last week and had a blast. Lesia of Babes in Tool Land said, “We began siding the house, and we ROCKED it. Erwin even trusted me with the nail gun, and it turns out, I’ve found my wheelhouse in construction! We all had a great time, and left happy and satisfied.”

Babes in Tool Land

If that doesn’t make you want to throw on your purple t-shirt and head out to the site, I don’t know what will… Congratulations again to all, and thank you for all your hard work!

Stay tuned – more awards are on the way!

We Did It!!!

Congratulations to all – we have officially reached our goal of $75,000!

Each year we start the Women Build program holding our breath and taking a leap of faith that we will be able to raise $75,000 to build a house for a single mom and her family. Your commitment, creativity and perseverance has paid off as we’ve met our 2013 goal! Whether you made visits, calls and emails to donors, held fundraisers, sold Delta Sonic tickets, got corporate funding, put out donation buckets at garage sales or in your office, or donated your own money… YOU DID IT! WAY TO GO!

Take a moment and celebrate – and thank your donors – share the good news – invite them out to see the house!

The Women Build Committee would like to acknowledge and give a great big thanks to Karen Kall who has led the Women Build program the past few years and put us on this successful path for the 2013 Women Build house!

And a big shout out to the entire 2012-2013 Women Build Committee who worked tirelessly behind the scenes with planning, fundraising, recruiting, and sweating the details of the Women Build program:

  • Mary Hadley
  • Sarah Stage
  • Stephanie Rankin
  • Jackie Crego
  • Judie Griffin

And also a huge THANK YOU to the ladies behind the scenes REALLY sweating the day to day details and tactical plans…our Flower City Habitat for Humanity Heroes:

  • Teresa Bianchi
  • Deanna Varble
  • Kayla Himelein

All money that comes in while we are working on the 2013 house will help us get a head start on our 2014 Women Build House fundraising, which will be a huge help!

Now our focus will be on completing the build. Make sure to sign up and get out on the site!

Happy Building!

2013 Women Build Awards

Greetings from the Women Build Steering Committee! It seems like only yesterday we were sitting in the fundraising juice boost sessions and gearing up to raise $75,000 for this year’s house and now we’re almost there! I think we all deserve a big pat on the back.

Go on. I’ll wait.

All joking aside, we wouldn’t be here today if it weren’t for all of your hard work, so THANK YOU. This year, we have decided to recognize the efforts of teams we feel have gone above and beyond with a series of awards. There will be categories for new teams, founding teams, large teams and small teams. The winning teams will receive a framed award certificate as well as recognition here on the blog over the next couple of weeks.

As always, if you have photos or news you’d like to share, please pass them along to our committee chair Mary Hadley. Happy building!

Moms and Homes

WBMothersDayMoms and homes – two things are at the heart of our Flower City Habitat Women Build program. We spend a significant amount of time raising funds and then raising a roof for a Rochester, NY single mother and her family.

Cassandra – Mother and our 2012 Women Build Homeowner

And why? Because we know having a stable, safe, healthy home changes the lives of children. 98% of Flower City Habitat children graduate from High School or earn their GED. In a city school district that has been graduating at a sad 50%, our Habitat homeowner families set the bar for achievement. It’s the quiet place to study, the warm bedroom to get a good night’s sleep, and the commitment to bettering one’s future that help our homeowner children begin to break the cycle of poverty in their families.

Venita – Mother and our 2011 Women Build Homeowner

In many of our homeowner families, and definitely in the case of our Women Build families, it’s a mother at the center that is helping to change the outlook for her children’s future. By stepping up and committing to 450 hours of sweat equity as well as a 30-year zero interest mortgage, she is taking control and setting an example for her children of what it means to work-hard and reap the benefits of commitment.

Linda - Mother and our 2010 Women Build Homeowner

Linda – Mother and our 2010 Women Build Homeowner

But it’s not only our Habitat homeowners that are great mothers who have set examples for their children. This is a story that can bridge demographics, race, and income – mothers setting the tone for success in their families.

So Habitat for Humanity International is asking, “How has your mom helped build your home?” Metaphorically and literally, many of us have great stories of our mothers and our home. We hope you’ll share yours with us – instructions are right here. (Don’t forget to use #WomenBuild13, #ROC, and @womenbuild in your story!) We also look forward to celebrating Mother’s Day – and ALL great mothers – with you at our 2013 Women Build Groundbreaking on May 11th. (For details click here.)
