The Porch Days of Summer

1798805_808397089194382_4768163558593440406_nFilled with lounging, lemonade, people watching, and neighbor chats. This is what late July and August is about! And for our Women Build teams, it’s about building that porch for our future homeowner family.

That’s right, we’re on to outside details like porches, siding, and doors. You know, all of those things that begin to make for curb appeal.

100_2019And speaking of appeals, we’re only about $5,000 away from making our $75,000 2014 Women Build goal. Which means we need your help to make that final push to your friends, family, and other networks to help us call the financial part of this house a done deal. And remember, anything extra we raise still goes to the Women Build program – so push push push! And if you’d like to donate, you can click here to make a general 2014 Women Build donation.

100_2022Then it will be time for celebration! In fact, add the date below to your calendar. It’s when we’ll be dedicating the house to the Bailey family – and EVERYONE is invited (including your team members, donors, and curious friends.)

Can You Dig It? 2014 Women Build Ground Breaking on May 10th

Womens build opening 2013 (2)

Spring has sprung (well, almost), and it’s time to start digging! Save the date and join the army of over 200 Women Build Volunteers as we break ground for the foundation of the 10th home sponsored and built by Flower City Habitat for Humanity Women Build volunteers.

Saturday, May 10th at 11:00 AM, 796 Jay Street

The groundbreaking ceremony is the official KICKOFF for the 2014 Women Build project and celebrates the first day of construction. It is the first of three major milestones in the building of the Women Build home. The second and third are the Wall Raising in June and the Dedication in August or September. Each milestone represents a time for celebration and reflection of what’s been accomplished, and what lies ahead.  It takes 77 days to build a house, and this is Day #1!! Please come and grab the ceremonial gold shovel and help with the dig, meet the family and other volunteers!

This also means that you and your teams can start signing up NOW for Build Days, with Tuesday, May 13th as the first official build day. Check out the schedule on Volunteer Up!, Flower City Habitat for Humanity’s online volunteer management system.

EVERYONE is WELCOME! We’ll be there rain or shine (and hopefully, no snow!!). Won’t you please join us? Bring your entire team and remember,

We Love Our Women Build Volunteers!

This week has been National Volunteer Week (April 6-12, 2014) and we want to take the opportunity to THANK OUR MANY DEDICATED WOMEN BUILD VOLUNTEERS!

Each year we set out to empower women to help women break the cycle of poverty by getting a mother and her family into stable and affordable housing.  It takes countless volunteer hours to raise the $75,000 to pay for each house AND the labor to build it. But year after year we have achieved this goal because of YOU!

As we begin work on our 10th Flower City Habitat for Humanity Women Build house we want to take a moment and CELEBRATE YOU – our volunteers who commit time, resources, energy and passion to empowering women to break the cycle of poverty by providing a hand up, not a hand out right here in Rochester.

We’re off to an amazing start this year with 22 Women Build teams signed up to fundraise and build!

YOU inspire us – you are creative, committed, and caring.

YOU are making a difference in our city one nail, one house, one community at a time.

“Give a Woman a Power Tool and She Can Change the World”

Time To Celebrate!

We’ve raised the money, we’ve built the house…it’s time to dedicate and celebrate! Mark your calendars:

What: 2013 Women Build House Dedication
When: December 14, 2013, 11am – 12pm
Where: 10 Kondolf Street, Rochester, NY 14606 (ceremony will be held indoors)

If you’ve never been to a Flower City Habitat for Humanity House Dedication, you’re missing out. The homeowners, family, staff and volunteers get the opportunity to gather together to celebrate the fact that months of dedication and hard work have finally paid off. Personally, it’s my favorite part of participating in a build – getting to see the dream of owning a home become a reality.

I do hope you’ll join us in celebrating with Kreasha, Don’Trael, Khemani and their family.

Also, teams are welcome (but by no means obligated) to bring gifts, cards, team photos, etc. to the dedication. If your team is planning to bring anything for Kreasha and her family, please let Teresa Bianchi know so she can plan accordingly.

Oh yeah…these guys will be there too!

Good Morning Everyone! Did you know that Tuesday is the beginning of the work week for build volunteers at Flower City Habitat for Humanity? Build days run Tuesday through Saturday, and if you haven’t signed up yet you can do so here.

In honor of the new week, Women Build Committee would like to recognize our new teams for 2013. These ladies have jumped in and offered ‘a hand-up not a hand-out” and we’re glad they did! The winners of the Rising Star Awards are:

Building 4 Generations
Hammer Heads
Hammer Time
iRoc Yoga

Don’t forget – it’s never too late to get involved! If you have a friend, colleague or family member who is interested in joining or starting a team, please have them contact Mary Hadley for information on the 2014 Women Build!

Over the Top

Next up, the Women Build Committee would like to recognize two teams who not only greatly exceeded their team’s fundraising goal, but did so with flair! The winners of the Over the Top award are:

Hammers ‘n’ Heels

The girls of Hammers ‘n’ Heels hail from the administration department at Manning and Napier and made a colorful addition to the Wall Raising Ceremony this year. Their team page features their own logo and a quote from Winston Churchill:

“You make a living by what you get, but you make a life by what you give.”

Great words to live by ladies!

Hammers 'n' Heels

Speaking of words, do you know what SWwAG stands for? This outstanding group of women created the acronym to stand for Strong Women with A Goal – a name which they have lived up to 100%.

Stay tuned – more awards to come!
